Three listings take most of the clicks. The factors that decide which three are more specific — and more fixable — than most businesses assume.
Proximity matters, but it is not destiny
Distance from the searcher is a genuine ranking factor, which is why businesses outside a town centre assume they cannot compete there. In practice, relevance and prominence regularly override modest distance disadvantages — especially for searches with clear service intent.
Your primary category does more work than anything else
If there is one setting worth getting right, it is the primary category on your Google Business Profile. It is the strongest single relevance signal available, and a surprising number of businesses have one that is close but wrong — chosen years ago and never revisited.
Fill in the parts everyone skips
Services with written descriptions, attributes, service areas, opening hours including holidays, and current photos. None of these are glamorous. Collectively they separate a complete profile from a neglected one, and completeness is something the algorithm can measure.
Review velocity beats review count
A business with 400 reviews and none in the last eight months looks less current than one with 60 reviews arriving steadily. Build review requests into the moment a job finishes, when satisfaction is highest and the request feels natural.
Location pages need to deserve their existence
Twelve pages differing only in the town name are a liability. A location page earns its place when it carries something genuinely local: work completed nearby, named areas covered, reviews from those customers, and details that could not be copied to another page.
Consistency across the web
Your name, address and phone number should match everywhere they appear. Old directory listings with a previous address or a disconnected number introduce doubt, and doubt is expensive when the algorithm is choosing three businesses out of thirty.
